Matchday 25 in the Bundesliga will go down in history in more ways than one. Several records were broken whilst the weekend truly belonged to the underdog. This is a weekend recap that you don’t want to miss. Here is your review and talking points from matchday 25 in the Bundesliga.
On Saturday, there were three big upsets, with Bayern Munich, Leverkusen, and Dortmund all losing at home on the same matchday.
This was the first time since April 30th 1988, that all three of these teams lost on the same matchday to teams all in the bottom half.
Bayern were cruising against Bochum 2-0 before Joao Paulinha was sent off close to halftime. What followed was an inspired second-half performance from Bochum, who turned the game on its head and managed to win 2-3. This is a massive boost to Bochum’s survival hopes whilst Bayern can consider themselves very lucky that Leverkusen failed to capitalise on their fault.
It’s also worth noting that before Bochum’s win, they hadn’t scored against Bayern away from home in 15 years! What’s more, the last time they did win at Bayern was at the old Olympic Stadion more than 30 years ago. What an achievement, and what a time to do it!
Leverkusen were simply second-best to a Werder Bremen side who hadn’t won or drawn in their previous five matches. Other than failing to pounce on Bayern’s mistake, the worst part of Saturday was Florian Wirtz coming off injured and being seen leaving the stadium on crutches.
As reported by GGFN’s Peter Weiss, an MRI on Saturday revealed a potential syndesmosis tear. A second opinion is now being sought, but the likelihood is that Wirtz could be sidelined for the remainder of the season.
Dortmund’s game at Augsburg began with the unveiling of their special jerseys to commemorate the club’s first Bundesliga trophy lift in 32 years back in the early 90s. The kit is a throwback to the famous 94/95 home shirt and is already a fan favourite. However, that was as good as it got. Augsburg scored a routine header at the back post following more school-boy defending, which at times has symbolise BVB’s campaign. It could have got worse for the home side if it wasn’t for the closest of VAR calls but ultimately, it didn’t matter as FCA completed their double of BVB for the first time in their history. The loss was greeted by boos, leaves Dortmund in the bottom half, and their players candid about the situation.
Emre Can: “We’re not a top team and don’t deserve to be in the top four or six. If it continues like this, it will be a very bad season for us. It’s not about fitness, it’s all in the mind. It has to do with attitude.”
“It really hurts,” Can said about the jeers directed at the squad. ”It’s understandable when they [the fans] freak out like that when. One can’t hold the fans responsible for that. It’s us players on the pitch.”
A Jeong Woo-Yeong goal ten minutes from time proved to be the winner for Union who overcame a tough Frankfurt side in order to give their survival hopes a new lease of life.
The Eagles completely dominated the first half and were ahead after just 13 minutes – Michy Batshuayi capitalised on Rasmus Kristensen’s deflected shot and scored his first-ever goal for the Eagles.
However, Union Berlin were a side transformed in the second half.
In the 62nd minute, Querfeld scored his first of the season as he met Christopher Trimmel’s corner with a clinical header into the top corner.
On the front foot, Union got themselves in front when Jeong Woo-Yeong picked up a loose ball on the halfway line and carried the ball into the Frankfurt box unchallenged.
With options to his left and right, the South Korean forward remained patient and curled a delightful shot from 20 yards into the bottom corner.
The Union faithful erupted in the stands and thought they had put the game to bed with just three minutes remaining.
Benedict Hollerbach converted Woo-Yeong’s cross, but the goal was harshly ruled out for a deflected handball during the build-up.
Union were shocked and matters nearly turned from bad to worse in added time.
A wayward Danilho Doekhi hand struck the ball, and Frankfurt were awarded a penalty in the 95th minute.
Rønnow, not for the first time this season, saved Union and saved the penalty from Hugo Ekitike with a save low to his right.
Union cleared the ball and held on for a memorable and, perhaps, Bundesliga-saving victory.
The win leaves Union in 14th on 26 points and 6 points clear of the relegation play-off spot. Meanwhile, Frankfurt remain 4th thanks to everyone below them in the top half failing to win.
Elsewhere, Mainz’s outstanding season continued as they moved up to 3rd after beating Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-3 on Friday evening. As Nadiem Amiri puts it: “It’s incredible what’s happening here now.”
Holstein Kiel played out a thrilling 2-2 with VfB Stuttgart, whilst there were also draws between Wolfsburg – St. Pauli (1-1), SC Frieburg – RB Leipzig (0-0), and TSG Hoffenheim – FC Heidenheim (1-1).
