Stefan Ortega is finally at the centre of transfer interest with his future at Manchester City in doubt for the majority of the ongoing summer window.

The Germany international has long been the subject of uncertainty at the Etihad Stadium, particularly following Manchester City’s decision to recruit James Trafford earlier in the summer from Burnley.

That deal instantly prompted questions over Stefan Ortega’s role in Pep Guardiola’s squad moving forward, especially given his consistent ambitions to operate as a number one goalkeeper and Ederson still being at the club despite widespread interest.

Should the Brazilian depart in the coming days, then Ortega would represent one of the more reliable options available to Pep Guardiola as a back-up, having already impressed in domestic and European competitions during his time in Manchester.

However, Ortega himself has not been short of interest. Earlier suggestions pointed towards Bundesliga and La Liga clubs keeping tabs on his availability, with Manchester City open to offers under the right conditions. The player is known to be highly regarded in his home country following a strong spell with Arminia Bielefeld prior to his Premier League switch.

Now, according to the information of BILD – as translated and relayed by Get German Football News – Borussia Mönchengladbach have shown an interest in Manchester City’s Stefan Ortega as they prepare for the departure of Jonas Omlin.

From the side of the Etihad Stadium’s 32-year-old Germany international goalkeeper, the report details that Ortega is free to leave after James Trafford’s arrival from Burnley earlier in the summer, although the former Arminia Bielefeld man’s salary could be a problem.

Mönchengladbach sporting director Roland Virkus recently discussed the type of profile they want to bring in to the club, as he explained, “It definitely shouldn’t be a very young goalkeeper, but someone with experience who could step in at any time.”

For Ortega, the opportunity to return to Germany and regain a No.1 role may be appealing. His reputation in the Bundesliga remains strong, and Mönchengladbach could provide him with both the platform to play regularly and stature of a well-regarded European club.

From Manchester City’s perspective, much could yet depend on Ederson’s final decision in the closing days of the market. Should the Brazilian stay, Ortega’s future could lean further towards an exit.

However, if Ederson departs, Pep Guardiola may feel compelled to keep Ortega as part of his core goalkeeping unit, alongside Trafford, rather than risk a complete overhaul in such a key position – all of this alongside ongoing links to PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Ultimately, Ortega’s situation is set to be one of the more intriguing subplots in the final days of City’s window. Borussia Mönchengladbach’s interest could yet force movement, but as with Ederson, much will come down to timing and the domino effect of transfers across Europe.
