Newcastle United will entertain Barcelona at St. James’ Park on Tuesday night as they look to secure a win at home in the first leg of this UEFA Champions League last 16 clash. The Magpies suffered a tough 3-1 loss at the hands of Manchester City recently, so they would be eager to put in a much-improved showing in midweek.

Eddie Howe will opt for the 4-3-3 formation and is expected to make a few changes to his first XI for this game. Dan Burn, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon could all play from the start of this clash.

Defence

Aaron Ramsdale will continue to operate in between the sticks for the Magpies after he conceded three goals in his last outing. Malick Thiaw will operate alongside Dan Burn at the heart of the Newcastle backline as they look to keep a good shape when defending inside their half.

Kieran Trippier will try to impress as the right-back, while Lewis Hall looks to prove his worth on the other side as the left-back. Both of them will have to pick and choose their moments to join in on the attack.

Alex Murphy and Sven Botman will offer cover for the defensive positions on the bench.

Midfield

Joelinton, Sandro Tonali and Joe Willock will make up Newcastle’s midfield as they focus on winning the 50-50 battles in the middle of the park.

Anthony Elanga will have to be content with a place on the bench as he waits for his chance to shine in the second 45 minutes if needed.

Attack

Harvey Barnes will try to catch the eye on the left flank, while Jacob Murphy looks to prove his value as the right-sided wide player. Both of them will have to get in behind the Barcelona backline at every chance they can get.

Anthony Gordon will spearhead Newcastle’s attack up top. He would be eager to get his name on the scoresheet versus the Catalan club in midweek.

Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade will be named on the bench and might come on to influence the game in the final quarter if the Magpies are in need of a goal by then.
