Mikkel Damsgaard scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Brentford defeated Burnley 4-3 in a seven-goal Premier League thriller at Turf Moor.

Damsgaard, Kevin Schade and Igor Thiago had given the Bees a three-goal lead in a contest packed with momentum swings and VAR drama. The Clarets fought back to level at 3-3, but the Dane had the final say, converting Rico Henry’s cross to earn the west Londoners a sixth away victory of the season.

Head coach Keith Andrews made five changes to the side beaten 2-0 by Brighton and Hove Albion the previous weekend.

Michael Kayode replaced Aaron Hickey at right-back, while goalkeeper Hákon Valdimarsson came in for the absent Caoimhín Kelleher.

Further changes saw Damsgaard, Yehor Yarmoliuk and Schade replace Jordan Henderson, Vitaly Janelt and Keane Lewis-Potter.

Burnley registered the first effort inside seven seconds. Zian Flemming seized possession following Thiago’s kick off, strode forward and dragged wide from distance.

On nine minutes, Mathias Jensen’s corner was punched away by Martin Dúbravka. The ball dropped kindly for Dango Ouattara, and the forward’s first-time effort was blocked by Josh Laurent.

Brentford took the lead from the resulting corner. Unmarked at the back post, Damsgaard met Ouattara’s in-swinging delivery with a thumping header that nestled into the bottom corner of the net.

Andrews’ side then went in search of a second. Thiago got the better of Joe Worrall and attempted to squeeze the ball past Dúbravka at his near post, but the keeper got down quickly to deny him.

Jaidon Anthony had two efforts at the other end: the first, a curling strike from the edge of the box, cleared the crossbar; the second, a powerful attempt, was gathered by Valdimarsson.

Brentford had a big chance to double their lead midway through the half. Thiago released Ouattara down the right and the winger’s low cross was turned wide by Schade.

In total control of the contest, the Bees were not to be denied a second goal at Turf Moor.

Yarmoliuk won a 50-50 in midfield and found Damsgaard, who split Burnley’s backline with a perfectly weighted through ball. Thiago did the rest, racing on to the Dane’s pass and rolling into the far corner with his left foot.

The west Londoners extended their advantage less than 10 minutes later.

Kayode hurled the ball in from the touchline and Sepp van den Berg made first contact at the front post. Lucas Pires cleared the defender’s header off the line but only as far as Schade, who lashed home from close range.

In stoppage time, Thiago outmuscled Pires inside the box and got a shot away, which was blocked by Worrall.

Burnley pulled a goal back in the final seconds before the break. Anthony, a bright spark for the home side, shot hard and low across the face of goal and Kayode inadvertently turned the ball into his own net at full stretch.

The hosts struck again within two minutes of the restart.

Moments after firing over the crossbar, Hannibal darted down the right flank and delivered the ball into the box. His cross bounced through to Anthony, who finished first time beyond Valdimarsson via Kayode’s outstretched leg.

With momentum now firmly on their side, Burnley completed the turnaround on the hour mark.

Having drifted across to the left, Hannibal arrowed a cross to the back post. Flemming ghosted in and headed down into the bottom corner to make it 3-3.

Fed by Pires, Lesley Ugochukwu directed an attempt towards goal, but Yarmoliuk made a crucial intervention and the ball struck the side netting.

Burnley had the ball in the back of the net for a fourth time on 78 minutes.

Anthony’s driven cross from the left was flicked up by Kristoffer Ajer and then bundled in by Flemming, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR check as Anthony's shoulder was ahead of the last defender.

There was to be late, late drama at Turf Moor. In the third minute of stoppage time, Henry burst down the left and delivered into a dangerous area. Damsgaard brought the cross down before guiding the ball into the far corner to give Brentford the lead in Lancashire.

Five minutes later, substitute Ashley Barnes thought he had snatched a point for the Clarets. Worrall headed a cross down and the striker thumped the ball into the far corner, but a lengthy VAR check overturned the goal for handball and Brentford's three points remained intact.

Andrews proud of response in ‘crazy game’ at Turf Moor

Head coach Keith Andrews shared his pride after Brentford’s late win at Burnley.

“It had a lot in it that game,” said the Bees boss.

“During the first half we played very well, while the second half was clearly a crazy game of football.

“I’m definitely relieved, for sure, but equally I’m proud of the boys being able to grind out the result and find a way to win the game – we speak about that a lot.”

Damsgaard reflects on late winner

Mikkel Damsgaard shared his thoughts after scoring two goals and registering an assist in Brentford’s 4-3 win at Burnley.

“I was very pleased [to score late on], especially in front of the fans,” said Damsgaard.

“There was a bit of relief; it was a game we were supposed to win having gone 3-0 up. Then it became a chaotic game, but it was good to win in the end.”
