Burnley are exploring a potential deal which would see Stuart Armstrong return from the MLS
Burnley are exploring a deal to sign Vancouver Whitecaps' Scottish international Stuart Armstrong this month.
That's according to Alan Nixon, who suggests that no sooner than four months after arriving in the MLS, Armstrong could already be ready to return to England, with the Clatrets among the names mentioned to be interested.
Scott Parker's side are keen to make moves in the market this month to boost their promotion hopes and Armstrong's experience could be key in helping them reach that goal.
The East Lancashire outfit are firmly in the promotion race, but after a lacklustre 0-0 draw against Sunderland on Friday night highlighted the need for a fresh approach in the final third, Parker could be ready to dip into the market sooner rather than later.
Armstrong seems to be a player he's identified who could help, and with vast experience in the English game, his profile certainly suits Parker's recruitment model.
Much of Parker's recruiting at Burnley has seen him bringing in experienced heads, with Ashley Barnes, John Egan and Joe Worrall all arriving with Championship promotions under their belt since the summer
Armstrong fits into that category too, having been promoted with Southampton last season, and although he did sit the latter part of the campaign out due to injury, his experience from inside the dressing room could prove invaluable.
The Scotsman, with 51 caps to his name for the Tartan Army, currently plies his trade in the MLS for Vancouver Whitecaps, moving there in September after his contract expired at St Mary's Stadium and was not renewed.
But according to Nixon, he could now be open to a move back to England, with Burnley among a host of Championship clubs interested in acquiring his services, although he doesn't name any other interested parties.
With Jonjo Shelvey training with the Clarets amid discussions over whether or not to offer the former England international a deal, Armstrong could prove to be a decent alternative.
Experience is the main selling point for Parker, but he will surely be a little concerned to see that Armstrong hasn't played any competitive football since November due to the MLS season finishing then, so there will be huge question marks over his fitness.
However, Armstrong did play a lot for Southampton in the 2023-24 season at second tier level without picking up many niggles, so that will no doubt play a part in Parker's interest in the experienced playmaker.
