Burnley manager twist involving Rob Edwards emerges

A new update has emerged in Burnley's protracted search for a successor to Scott Parker at Turf Moor

Burnley remain managerless after parting company with Scott Parker nearly two months ago, and while a host of bosses have been touted as potential candidates for the top job at Turf Moor, a new name has emerged among the contenders in a freshly-emerging update.

The Clarets dismissed Parker with four matches to spare of their Premier League campaign, in which relegation back to the Championship had already been sealed, but whereas West Ham and Wolves have been able to head underway with preparations after joining the Lancashire outfit in English football's second-tier, the manager situation has been something of a hindrance and supporters are banging the drum for action in the coming days and weeks.

Indeed, Burnley now represent the only Championship side without a manager in place ahead of the 2026/27 season, with the summer transfer window having already commenced last week. A series of names have been linked with the job, including Steven Gerrard, Derby County boss John Eustace and Cardiff City head coach Brian Barry-Murphy, while Russell Martin was also of reported interest before joining League One newcomers Leicester City.

Craig Bellamy, on the other hand, has emerged as a persistent target following Wales' failure to qualify for the ongoing World Cup in North America. The Welshman, of course, previously worked as Vincent Kompany's assistant prior to taking his first step into senior management with the Dragons, and Burnley have been making fresh plays to take him away from his beloved role in charge of his nation in favour of a return to East Lancashire in recent times - even if such an operation will prove easier said than done.

Should Burnley fall short of returning Bellamy, though, they appear to have a contingency plan in the form of a potential move for another manager, who was only recently relieved of his duties with a Championship rival.

Rob Edwards on Burnley manager radar

The manager in question is Rob Edwards, with the 43-year-old now finding himself out of work after his shock sacking at Wolves in order to complete the appointment of Cesar Peixoto less than two weeks ago.

Edwards' sudden departure from Molineux came as a seismic shock across the game, and while the ex-Luton Town and Middlesbrough boss appeared primed to oversee the Old Gold's promotion push after jumping ship from Teesside last year, his availability has placed Burnley on alert ahead of a potential swoop.

That's according to a fresh report from TEAMtalk, which has claimed that Edwards' name is featuring prominently in discussions involving Monchi - with the well-renowned Spaniard assisting with the Clarets' managerial saga alongside his duties as sporting chief with sister club Espanyol.

As per the update, Edwards is believed to represent an attractive candidate owing to his experience of working with developing squads, having earned a wide range of plaudits for leading Luton to a surprise promotion to the Premier League in 2023, and his reputation as a strong coach is also said to be maintained.

Indeed, TEAMtalk adds that many figureheads in the game regard Edwards as unfortunate to have suddenly lost his job in the West Midlands.

However, it's also reported that no final decision has yet been made on the former Forest Green Rovers boss and, for the time being at least, it's Bellamy's name which is atop the wishlist of the club's key decision-makers.

It seems as though Burnley will seek an outcome of their pursuit of Bellamy before seriously setting their sights on an alternative candidate such as Edwards or the aforementioned Gerrard, meaning it will be interesting to see how developments unfold in the near future and whether the Clarets end up intensifying interest elsewhere as a result.

Rob Edwards would be a strong appointment for Burnley

Edwards tends to cut a divisive figure, and though supporters of Middlesbrough in particular have hardly lost sleep over his plight following the Welsh international's hugely-controversial decision to depart the Riverside Stadium just months into his tenure to broker a return to ex-club Wolves at a stage in which they were vying for promotion, there's no denying that he's an experienced and capable manager at this level who has a clear track record in pushes at the top-end of the table.

It's unclear exactly how Middlesbrough would've fared had Edwards maintained his position, with Kim Hellberg later taking the side to the play-off final against Hull City, yet his former body of work at Luton is also encouraging as he guided an unfancied outfit all the way to the Premier League against the odds while operating on a limited budget.

That was three years ago, and Edwards has endured rockier times as of late, but it's hard to feel that he wouldn't be able to get a tune out of what remains an extremely gifted squad at Championship level - one which has every chance of returning to the Premier League at the very first time of asking under the right leadership.
