Burnley must win race to sign Man Utd star

Burnley have to be eyeing fringe players from Premier League clubs and Bristol City proved why Man United have the perfect signing for the Clarets...

Burnley's return to the Championship has inevitably prompted questions about how quickly they can bounce back after Scott Parker, with one area of the pitch standing out more than most and Man United hold the answer.

Relegation was not in the plan but it was also not surprising when Josh Brownhill, CJ Egan-Riley, and James Trafford all departed last summer after performing as key players in 2024/25. Brownhill provided output at the top of the pitch but the Clarets have shown in recent years just how important having an elite back five can be to a successful promotion push.

During their last Championship campaign, Egan-Riley and Trafford were two of the division's standout performers. However, the goalkeeper, now a full England international, gave Burnley presence and a platform to build from, and his departure back to Manchester City ultimately left a void that proved difficult to fill consistently at Premier League level.

As Burnley prepare for another promotion bid, finding a goalkeeper capable of replicating Trafford's impact should be among their top priorities. The Championship is often decided by fine margins, and few positions influence those margins more than the man between the posts.

Burnley should sign Man United goalkeeper Radek Vitek to replace Martin Dubravka

With Martin Dubravka now 37 and with his contract up this summer, a move for Radek Vitek makes so much sense for Burnley. The Manchester United goalkeeper is coming off a remarkable loan spell at Bristol City, where he established himself as one of the Championship's best performing goalkeepers.

Behind Carl Rushworth, there was arguably no one better. The 22-year-old swept the board at Ashton Gate, collecting the club's Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year, and Players' Player of the Year awards after an outstanding campaign. Those accolades were fully deserved, too.

According to FotMob, only three goalkeepers had a better 'goals prevented' figure than Vitek's 5.4. Vitek demonstrated impressive shot-stopping ability, consistency, and maturity beyond his years throughout the season. He has proven that he is more than capable of handling the demands of senior football at a high level.

From Man United's perspective, his pathway to regular first-team football appears increasingly blocked. Senne Lammens, who is only 23 himself, is viewed as Michael Carrick's first-choice goalkeeper moving forward. With experienced options such as Sam Johnstone and Karl Darlow being considered as backup options, per Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic.

It means opportunities for Vitek at Old Trafford could be limited and that situation presents Burnley with a major opportunity. At 22, Vitek would not just be a short-term fix, but he could become the cornerstone of Burnley's project for years to come.

Goalkeepers often peak later than outfield players, meaning the Czech shot-stopper potentially has a decade or more of high-level football ahead of him.

Importantly, the former Bristol City stopper already knows the Championship. Burnley would not be gambling on a player adapting to the division for the first time. They would be signing someone who has already proven he can thrive in one of the most demanding leagues in European football.

Radek Vitek parallels to James Trafford are obvious

Another interesting angle is that there are obvious parallels with Trafford's arrival from Man City. Burnley identified a highly-rated young goalkeeper from one side of Manchester and turned him into one of the Championship's defining players. There is every reason to believe they could do something similar with Vitek from the red half of the city.

The biggest obstacle is likely to be the transfer fee. Given his age, potential, and exceptional season at Bristol City, United are unlikely to allow him to leave cheaply. However, promotion is worth tens of millions of pounds, and Burnley should absolutely view Vitek as an investment rather than an expense.

If the Clarets are serious about securing an immediate return to the Premier League, signing one of the Championship's outstanding goalkeepers from last season could prove to be one of the smartest moves they make all summer.

Of course, any potential deal for Burnley could hinge on what happens with Dubravka too, but the Red Devils are likely to be open to selling Vitek now that his stock is so high. The 6'6" goalkeeper has two years remaining on his deal and cashing in could work out perfectly for all parties involved.
