The Clarets’ boss is reportedly targeting a player he’s worked with before for the Premier League task ahead
Burnley are reportedly showing an interest in Fulham midfielder Harrison Reed ahead of the summer transfer window.
GIVEMESPORT revealed the Clarets’ interest in the 30-year-old as they look to build a squad ready to compete in the Premier League.
Scott Parker knows all about Reed, having been manager of Fulham when they signed the player from Southampton in the summer of 2020.
Reed has fallen out of favour at Craven Cottage this term and could view a rekindling with his old boss at Turf Moor as a way to reboot his career.
The report states that Parker is keen to bring his former midfielder to Turf Moor this summer.
It’s as yet unclear whether the proposed deal would be a loan or full sale, but the Cottagers would be in the driving seat to set their price given Reed is under contract until 2027, with a club option of an additional year.
Reed originally cost the west London side £6m when he signed in 2020 from the Saints.
Given his age and lack of minutes this season, Fulham may well be willing to deal at a figure lower than that.
Despite being a relatively key figure for the Cottagers last term, making 27 Premier League appearances and even captaining the side on a handful of occasions, Reed has drifted away from the first-team picture during this campaign.
The midfielder did suffer a knee injury midway through the season, which he has since recovered from, but, despite that, he is still yet to make a Premier League start this term, with only a few games of the season now left to play.
Much preferred by manager Marco Silva this campaign have been the likes of Sander Berge, Andreas Pereira, Emile Smith Rowe and Sasa Lukic in the centre of the pitch.
Given Reed falling so far down the pecking order, a move seems sensible for both the player and Fulham.
The midfielder has now entered his 30s and hasn’t even managed a start for Fulham, a strong but still mid-table side.
It’s not the most enticing situation for onlookers, meaning a Premier League move for Reed was far from guaranteed.
However, in Parker, Reed would find a manager who knows his game and character inside out, which means if the Burnley boss sanctions the move, he’s likely to get opportunities based on the already-built reputation he arrives with.
It could be a shrewd pick-up for Burnley, too.
Given his diminishing importance at Craven Cottage, with two years still left to run, Fulham are likely to be more malleable when it comes to negotiating a fee, making the Clarets’ chances of bagging a bargain very real.
It has been well publicised just how hard Premier League survival is for promoted sides, and with Reed, Burnley would be getting a midfielder who boasts 123 top-tier outings, adding much-needed experience to a squad guaranteed to suffer a gruelling season to compete for survival.
