Former Sheffield United defender Anel Ahmedhodzic could leave Feyenoord this summer, as Burnley, the Blades, and Wrexham should be ready

Former Sheffield United defender Anel Ahmedhodzic could be on his way out of Feyenoord this summer, and FLW has taken a look at three EFL clubs that should be ready to pounce if the centre-back becomes available.

Bosnian defender Ahmedhodzic spent time in the youth system of Malmö and Nottingham Forest, making one Championship appearance for the Midlands outfit, before returning to the Swedish outfit.

He'd spend time in Denmark and France thereafter, the latter with Bordeaux, before securing a move to Sheffield United in the summer of 2022.

The 27-year-old would play a crucial role in Chris Wilder's side's promotion to the Premier League in 2023, and would spend three years at Bramall Lane before joining Feyenoord last summer for just £7 million.

Despite making 26 league appearances for the Dutch giants last campaign, according to AD, Ahmedhodzic could leave the club this summer, deemed to no longer fit their style of play, as FLW names three Championship clubs that ought to be on alert in case an exit is on the cards this summer.

Burnley have made just three additions this summer, as new boss Nicky Hayen prepares his Clarets squad for the upcoming Championship campaign with the majority of the group that they came down with.

Each of Lluc Castell, Ugo Raghouber, and Ben Amos have arrived at Turf Moor this summer, whilst the likes of Loum Tchaouna, Maxime Esteve, Florentino, and Jaidon Anthony have all left the club.

It would be hard to argue they haven't gotten weaker, and as Hayen looks to find his best side, the defence appears to be a priority area for improvement, with a loan deal for Manchester City's Max Alleyne having been agreed.

However, with Joe Worrall, Bashir Humphreys, Hjalmar Ekdal, and Kyle Walker as the only other options at centre-back, another option ought to be considered, and Ahmedhodzic could be the perfect fit.

Unlikely to break the bank given Feyenoord's position, the Bosnian knows exactly what it takes to fire a team to promotion in the English second tier and fight in the upper echelons of the table.

Whilst not the best at playing out from the back, his defensive abilities cannot be questioned, and capable of playing in a back three or four, he offers a versatility Hayen would love, as the Clarets should look to get this one over the line.

Sheffield United's fragilities at the back are there on view heading into the new Championship season, with each of Leo Hjelde, Ben Mee, and Tyler Bindon having left the club in the summer.

Chris Wilder has further pushed his defensive options into turmoil by stating that neither Mark McGuinness nor Nils Zatterstrom have futures at the club.

This leaves just Japhet Tanganga and Jamal Baptiste as the club's only senior centre-back options at the moment, and though a deal worth around £10 million for Leicester City's Harry Souttar is edging nearer, there remain legitimate concerns around that area.

Souttar has played just three league games in the past 18 months after a long-term injury, and even then, the Aussie takes their defensive options to three-strong.

Ahmedhodzic, having made over a century of appearances for the South Yorkshire outfit, knows exactly what it means to represent the Blades, and would be a perfect fit for Wilder.

Wilder is not afraid to bring back players he has worked with previously, hence the Souttar move as well as Kalvin Phillips' recent switch, and Ahmedhodzic is no different in that respect.

Whether Sheffield United would be willing to fork out another multi-million-pound fee on another defender after the imminent arrival of Souttar remains to be seen, though he is someone Wilder would be remiss to not consider making a return for.

Wrexham

Wrexham will have their focus set on promotion to the Premier League this season, with Phil Parkinson's side looking to continue their incredible upward trajectory through the EFL.

The former Bradford City, Bolton Wanderers, and Sunderland boss has consistently deployed a 3-4-2-1 shape in North Wales since taking charge, and heading into next season, that doesn't look like changing.

Callum Doyle remains their only significant investment in that area, having spent a lot in other areas of the squad over recent years, and this window alone, with wing-back Danny Imray joining for around £5 million, midfielder Ben Whiteman for around £3 million, and goalkeeper Anthony Patterson for around £8 million.

Max Cleworth, Zak Vyner, Dom Hyam, Dan Scarr, and Lewis Brunt offer more competition in that area, yet the Red Dragons are lacking that serious firepower from the back, something Ahmedhodzic could provide if given the opportunity.

Wrexham have not been afraid to splash the cash under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, and signing a player with ample experience in the Championship, as well as numerous top-flight leagues, is not out of the realm of possibility.

The Bosnian would take their defence to the next level, and only strengthen their chances of that elusive place in the Premier League.
