Title-chasing Manchester City take on Burnley in the Premier League on Wednesday, with Pep Guardiola’s side looking to move top of the table for the first time since August (8pm, Sky Sports Main Event).
The Cityzens landed the latest blow of an enthralling title race at the weekend with a 2-1 win over Arsenal at the Etihad, and they now sit just three points behind the Gunners with a game in hand.
The win over Arsenal means City are now 4/6 favourites to win the Premier League on betting sites, and the first hurdle of their re-ignited title charge is a trip to Turf Moor to face relegation-threatened Burnley.
The Clarets sit in 19th with just five games left of the season, and defeat this evening will confirm another immediate return to the Championship for Scott Parker’s team.
Football betting sites have priced Burnley at 18/1 to secure a stay of execution with a win over City, who are 1/7 to come out on top.
You can’t rule out anything at this stage of a title race, but it feels like anything but a City win at Turf Moor would be a huge surprise.
Guardiola’s side have only lost once in their last 21 league games and though draws against West Ham and Nottingham Forest briefly harmed their title hopes, the Cityzens look in ominous form ahead of their final six games of the run in.
Conversely, Burnley have struggled throughout this season, and Scott Parker’s side sit in 19th, 12 points adrift of safety with just five games left.
In reality, the Clarets will be playing in the second division next season, though they could still have an effect on the title race. However, that feels unlikely, with Parker’s men having lost four of their last five games, with their last win coming on 11 February.
Overall, Burnley have scored two and conceded 11 goals over their last five, while City have scored 12 and conceded just two. With that in mind, and regarding the recent form and gulf in class between the two sides, we think City will ease to a straightforward win while also keeping an away clean sheet.
Rayan Cherki has emerged as a key player for City as they’ve fought back into the title race, and while his superb goal against Arsenal took the headlines for the all the right reasons, it is the number of assists that has so far caught the eye with the Frenchman.
Cherki became the first player to reach 10+ goals and 10+ assists in all competitions with his goal against the Gunners, and while he now has four goals in his first year in the league, it is his tally of 10 assists that looks more impressive.
The 22-year-old has become the focal point of the City attack and he is now the man tasked with unlocking opposition defences, and that will be no different at Turf Moor.
Whether he starts or not, we expect Cherki to continue his hot streak and influence the game, so we think a wager on the Frenchman to register one or more assists on Wednesday could offer good value.
Burnley XI: Dubravka; Walker, Ekdal, Esteve, Hartman; Ward-Prowse, Luis; Edwards, Ugochukwu, Anthony; Flemming.
Manchester City XI: Donnarumma; Nunes, Khusanov, Guehi, O’Reilly; Rodri, Silva; Semenyo, Cherki, Doku; Haaland.
