Another packed EFL weekend is upon us, with local rivalries, unbeaten records, managers under pressure and dangerous attacking players all providing plenty of storylines to keep an eye on.

Burnley are searching for their first Championship win of the season, while a London derby returns to The Den.

Elsewhere, unbeaten Huddersfield Town travel to Bromley, two of League One’s most dangerous attacks meet at Hillsborough, and five unbeaten League Two sides are all in action.

Here are five EFL fixtures to watch out for this weekend.

Burnley vs Derby County – Pressure Mounting on Both Managers

Burnley welcome Derby County to Turf Moor on Saturday, with both sides desperate for a result.

The Clarets are one of only two Championship teams yet to win this season and have now gone 19 league games without a victory.

Their defensive record has done little to help, with 16 goals conceded the most in the Championship while their only clean sheet came in the EFL Cup against Bradford City.

Largie Ramazani finally opened his account for the club in last weekend’s 3-1 defeat to Swansea City, but individual mistakes once again proved costly.

There is plenty of experience within Burnley’s squad, with Kyle Walker and Jamie Vardy among the headline additions, but results are becoming increasingly important.

Derby’s problems are arguably even more obvious going forward. The Rams have scored just six goals in their opening seven Championship matches, the lowest total in the division, and have lost their last three games.

Bobby Clark put Derby ahead against Birmingham City last weekend, only for Carlos Vicente and Paik Seung-Ho to turn the game around.

Adding to the pressure is the absence of goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström. The Swedish international has made 28 saves this season but is injured and will miss Saturday’s trip to Turf Moor.

History does not exactly favour Derby either. Burnley are unbeaten in their last 14 league meetings with the Rams, while Derby have failed to win any of their last nine league visits to Turf Moor.

With both managers under increasing pressure, this could prove to be a pivotal afternoon for either side.

Millwall vs West Ham United – A London Derby Returns

The Championship gets a London derby as Millwall welcome West Ham United to The Den.

West Ham currently sit top of the Championship on goal difference after winning four consecutive league matches.

Their attacking numbers have been particularly impressive, with the Hammers scoring at least three goals in each of those victories and six more goals than any other side in the division.

A midweek EFL Cup defeat to Fulham brought an end to their six-game unbeaten run across all competitions, but Graham Potter‘s side can now turn their attention back towards the Championship.

Millwall, meanwhile, have won just once in their last five league matches. Three defeats and a draw during that run have seen them concede 13 goals, highlighting an area that will need significant improvement against one of the division’s strongest attacks.

History at The Den does provide Millwall with some encouragement. They are unbeaten in their last five home league meetings with West Ham, winning three and drawing two. West Ham’s last league victory at The Den came all the way back in December 1988.

One player capable of making the difference is Jarrod Bowen, who has scored and assisted in the same league match 10 times since the beginning of the 2023/24 season.

Millwall will need to tighten up defensively, while West Ham’s attacking firepower could make this a fascinating encounter.

It is not the only derby worth watching this weekend, either.

Sunday lunchtime brings the Black Country derby, with Wolverhampton Wanderers hosting West Bromwich Albion in the Championship.

League One also provides an East Midlands derby as Burton Albion welcome Mansfield Town to the Pirelli Stadium, with Nigel Clough returning to his former club.

With three major local derbies taking place across the EFL, rivalry is certainly one of the major themes of the weekend.

Bromley vs Huddersfield Town – Can Anyone Stop the Terriers?

Bromley welcome unbeaten Huddersfield Town to the Copperjax Community Stadium, with the visitors looking to maintain their perfect start to life in League One.

Bromley currently sit 22nd with five points from their opening six matches and have conceded 17 goals, the most in the division.

Their season started positively with a victory at Barnsley, but five matches without a win followed.

A 2-2 draw at Blackpool did at least bring an end to a losing streak, with Victor Adeboyejo and JJ McKiernan both finding the net as Bromley twice came from behind.

Huddersfield, by contrast, remain the only unbeaten side in League One.

Three wins and three draws have given the Terriers 12 points from their opening six matches, while they have conceded just four goals.

They have already picked up impressive victories against Cambridge United and Oxford United, and another three points at Bromley could potentially send them to the top of the table.

Adeboyejo has four league goals for Bromley, but Huddersfield’s Joe Taylor has already found the net five times.

Bromley’s defensive problems make Huddersfield the stronger side on paper, although home advantage could give the hosts a chance to cause an upset.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Stockport County – Attacking Firepower on Show

Two of League One’s most dangerous attacks go head-to-head when Sheffield Wednesday host Stockport County at Hillsborough.

Wednesday have taken 13 points from their opening six matches following relegation from the Championship, despite rebuilding almost their entire squad over the summer.

Their attacking numbers have been encouraging, with 13 goals scored and six conceded.

Three consecutive victories over Bromley, Wycombe Wanderers and Peterborough United produced 11 goals.

A goalless draw against Wigan Athletic last weekend halted that run, but Wednesday remain firmly among the early contenders near the top of the table.

Stockport have been even more prolific.

The Hatters have scored 16 goals in their opening six matches, the highest total in League One, including 12 across three victories. Their 4-0 demolition of Wigan was particularly impressive.

There have been defensive concerns, however, with 10 goals conceded. Their 4-3 defeat to Leicester City showed just how dangerous they can be going forward, as they continued to fight back despite falling 4-1 behind.

Kyle Wootton has already scored five goals after finding the net 20 times last season, while Jack Diamond has four and Harry Wood has three.

With so much attacking quality on both sides, this could be one of the weekend’s most entertaining fixtures.

Barnet vs Fleetwood Town – Two Unbeaten Sides Collide

Early League Two leaders Barnet welcome unbeaten Fleetwood Town to The Hive, with just two points separating the sides after six matches.

Barnet have collected 12 points from their opening six games, winning three and drawing three, while Fleetwood sit seventh with 10 points.

The Bees come into the match after a 2-1 victory over Accrington Stanley, while Fleetwood drew 1-1 with Newport County before producing an impressive 1-0 EFL Cup victory over Sheffield United.

Barnet have scored 11 goals across their last five league matches, although they are yet to keep a clean sheet this season.

Fleetwood’s recent league form has been slightly more conservative, with one victory and four draws from their last five matches. They have scored six and conceded four during that run.

The recent head-to-head record makes this even more intriguing. Barnet won the most recent meeting 5-2 at Highbury, although Fleetwood have won three of the last four meetings overall.

Barnet and Fleetwood are not the only unbeaten League Two sides in action this weekend, either. Walsall, Grimsby Town and Crewe Alexandra are also yet to taste defeat.

Walsall have taken 10 points from their opening six matches, while Grimsby have also collected 10 points.

Crewe will be looking to continue their unbeaten start against a Shrewsbury side who could be on the brink of a major takeover.

Shrewsbury have confirmed that a prospective American consortium has received approval from both the EFL and the Independent Football Regulator, with the remaining documentation required to finalise the transaction now being completed.

That means all five unbeaten League Two sides are in action this weekend, with the results potentially having a major impact on the early-season table.

Something has to give somewhere.
