BVB boss hails fitness, togetherness and Kovač as reasons behind their fine form | OneFootball

In an interview with BILD, Borussia Dortmund sporting director Lars Ricken believes there are several reasons for the club's recent upswing in the Bundesliga and Champions League.

"We deliberately kept our squad together in the summer and only strengthened ourselves selectively. This is a key factor for success.

"It was important to us that we start the season well and not find ourselves lagging behind right from the start.

"It was very helpful for Niko to be able to communicate his ideas to the core of the team over the months," the BVB boss said.

Having conceded only four goals in the first six Bundesliga games, Ricken attributed that feat to the squad's fitness levels and a newfound unity amongst the players.

"With our style of play, we have to aim to be the fittest team. The data has improved dramatically, even during the past season. Our changes in athleticism are bearing fruit.

“It was important to unite the club. To work together towards the goal. Things were very unsettled around BVB for a long time.

"I have to say: Niko has contributed greatly to making things significantly better. How he leads the team.

“And how he presents himself in public. That's another reason why it was very important to us to strengthen him,” Ricken explained.
