BVB Trio Led by Schlotterbeck Makes the Cut: Klopp Names His First DFB Squad | OneFootball

Less than a week after making his return to the starting lineup in the Bundesliga, Nico Schlotterbeck is delighted to have been named to the DFB squad once again. The center back suffered an ankle injury in late June during a World Cup qualifier against Ivory Coast and was subsequently sidelined for more than two months. Schlotterbeck has made 29 appearances for the German senior national team to date (one goal).

Alongside the 26-year-old, Waldemar Anton and Felix Nmecha have also been called up to the German national team again. Both were also part of the German squad at the World Cup in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada in June and July. They have made 12 and 15 international appearances for Germany, respectively.

Under the new national team coach, this marks a first: A total of 44 players have been named for the international match period, divided among two different squads. Nico Schlotterbeck and Felix Nmecha will be part of the squad for the matches against the Netherlands (24 Sept.) and Greece (27 Sept.), while Waldemar Anton will be part of the DFB squad for the match against Serbia (1 Oct.) and the second match against Greece (4 Oct.).

According to Jürgen Klopp, Schlotterbeck is part of a small group of players whom he would like to keep on site “for the full two weeks, if at all possible,” in order to help them find their rhythm after a lengthy injury layoff and to have them participate in regular team training. The national team coach explained this on Thursday morning at the DFB press conference.
