BVB Women Aim to Build on Their Strong Start Against Mecklenbeck | OneFootball

The scenario

After the 5-0 away win in Rhade last Sunday, the team and coach were in agreement: It was a dominant performance that, given the abundance of scoring chances, certainly deserved one or two additional goals. Markus Högner: “Against a determined team, we created numerous scoring opportunities, though they sometimes lacked precision in the final third. Overall, though, I look back on a solid and tactically sound performance that we now want to build on.”

Roster

There’s still a question mark regarding Rita Schumacher—who scored twice against SSV Rhade. The forward finished the training week feeling under the weather. Marina Scholz recently joined the BVB Women’s second team and, having recovered from a bruise, is back in the lineup for the match against Mecklenbeck.

Opponent

With four points from their first two games, DJK Wacker Mecklenbeck travels to Dortmund undefeated. Most recently, coach Felix Melchers’ team showed resilience in a 2-1 home win against MSV Duisburg, scoring the decisive goal in the third minute of stoppage time. “We’re expecting a well-organized team that consistently makes it difficult for their opponents to find open space,” says Markus Högner, looking ahead to the upcoming match. “That will require a lot of patience on Sunday, as well as confident movement forward even without the ball.”

In addition to an offensive mindset, however, the coach is also calling for a focused back line against Mecklenbeck in certain situations: “We need to apply counter-pressing effectively to prevent long balls as much as possible. The DJK has definitely strengthened in this area with Jasmin Jabbes.”

A Happy Reunion and a Warning

That very same Jasmin Jabbes played for BVB last season (26 appearances, 8 goals) and is therefore likely still very familiar with the Strobelallee area. “Jasmin has excellent transition play and brings a lot of stamina, which she can sustain for an entire game,” says Markus Högner, well aware of his former player’s strengths. “She proved just how dangerous she is last weekend by scoring the last-minute winning goal against MSV Duisburg.”Robert Targan
