SGS Essen's U21s, an ambitious side, visited the Rote Erde stadium for a Ruhr derby. In fifth place in the table, they had the chance to close the gap on BVB to just one point. However, Borussia went into this home game full of confidence after four consecutive wins. Coach Markus Högner made two changes to the starting line-up compared to the match against FSV Gütersloh a week ago. Annika Enderle and Yasu Wöhrn started in place of Dana Marquardt and Ronja Leubner.
The match began with BVB having a slight advantage, enjoying more possession from the outset. After a fairly uneventful first few minutes, the Black & Yellows could have taken the lead through Enderle. However, the forward failed to hit the target, sending the ball just wide of the mark (15).
In the 27th minute, Borussia took a deserved lead: after an attack down the left wing, the ball landed at the feet of Celina Baum, who shot while off-balance to make it 1-0. Dortmund remained the better team after that. In the 33rd minute, Enderle hit the crossbar, before a foul in the penalty area led to a penalty. Rita Schumacher confidently converted into the right corner and celebrated her goal with a beautiful gesture – she held up the jersey of the injured Marquardt.
Just four minutes later (36), BVB added to their lead: it was Baum again who scored to make it 3-0 after an assist from Schumacher. The team went into half-time with this clear lead.
The game flattened out somewhat in the second half. BVB continued to dominate the game, but shifted down a few gears. While the spectators were treated to an offensive spectacle in the first half, the game now lost momentum in view of the clear result. SGS managed to stabilise their defence significantly.
Nevertheless, BVB still managed to make it 4-0. In the 73rd minute, Baum broke through strongly and laid the ball back into the space behind the defence, where Jenske Steenwijk was unmarked and finished confidently.
Next Sunday, Borussia will travel to the Rhineland for their Regionalliga West away game against Vorwärts Spoho Köln (16 November, 15:00 CET). The match will kick off on the Nordfeld artificial turf pitch and can also be watched live and free of charge on Pluto TV.
