BVB Women take the Top Spot in the ttandings: 5-0 win in Duisburg | OneFootball

Compared to the cup match against Recklinghausen, head coach Markus Högner made three changes to the starting lineup. Lara Schmidt replaced Melanie Schuster in defense, Ricarda Walkling took Noreen Günnewig’s place in midfield, and Ronja Leubner started in place of Annika Enderle on offense. Jacqueline Meißner, who was rested for the cup match, returned to the matchday roster and scored the 5-0 goal from long range shortly after coming on as a substitute.

The Borussia women began their first matchup against MSV Duisburg with plenty of drive toward the goal. Just two minutes in, the ball found the back of the hosts’ net, but goal scorer Ronja Leubner had been narrowly offside when Rita Schumacher played the long diagonal pass. The offside goal gave the BVB Women an extra boost of confidence: Just four minutes later, Ronja Leubner was once again the center of attention when she played a pinpoint through ball to Ramona Maier, who had broken free. While Maier’s first chip attempt bounced off the post, she was able to slot home the rebound for a 1-0 lead (6th minute). Just one attack later, Ann-Sophie Vogel - who was celebrating her 28th birthday that day - broke through on the left flank. Her low cross set up the second goal for Ramona Maier, who easily tapped it in to make it 2-0 (7th minute).

In the ten minutes following the early lead, the game settled down somewhat before Schumacher delivered a pinpoint cross to the far post, where Lara Schmidt headed it in from close range to make it 3-0 (18th minute). As the game progressed, the BVB Women took a few long-range shots, controlled the flow of the game, and patiently moved the ball through their own ranks. An injury timeout for the Duisburg goalkeeper calmed the game down before halftime - the teams headed into the locker room with a 3-0 lead.

Under bright sunshine, the BVB fans who had made the trip witnessed a furious restart by the BVB Women. A long throw-in caught the Duisburg defense out of position, but two-goal scorer Ramona Maier missed a clear chance in front of the goal against substitute goalkeeper Ilke Brandsma (46'). Immediately afterward, Schumacher scored on a free kick - 4-0 in the 47th minute. Substitute Jacqueline Meißner rewarded herself in the 61st minute with her first goal of the season, a long-range strike that made it 5-0.

In the closing minutes, the Duisburg women gained more possession, but the BVB Women maintained their clean sheet in their fifth competitive match of the season. The final score was a decisive 5-0 away victory on the grass field in Duisburg, which saw the BVB Women take the lead in the Regionalliga West standings on Matchday 4.

Reactions

Vogel: “We knew Duisburg wasn’t going to make it easy for us today, and they showed that in the one-on-one battles. The first few minutes went very well; after that, things got a bit disjointed on my side, but with a 5-0 win, we can be satisfied in the end. For me, of course, it was extra special when I got a little birthday sing-along as I walked onto the field. I’m trying to give that back to the fans on the field in my third season with BVB!”

Meißner: “I don’t think we were that dominant for the entire game. We often had to scramble to defend on the counter after misplaced passes. As a defender, it’s always nice to score a goal, but in the end, of course, it doesn’t matter who scores. We didn’t concede a goal again today—that’s always one of our goals, and we’ve achieved it once more. On top of that, we’re now at the top of the standings, and of course we want to stay there until the end.”

Högner: “We got off to a great start, played really well offensively in the first 20 minutes, created scoring chances, and capitalized on them. We had a lot of good stretches, but also two very sloppy stretches where we made avoidable mistakes. Duisburg did well there and closed us down effectively. Of course, we’re satisfied with a 5–0 win against a determined opponent, but if we play even more consistently, we’ll score a goal or two more.”

This coming Sunday (Sept. 20), the team will once again play on the road against a newly promoted team. The match against SV Fortuna Freudenberg will take place at 3 p.m. on the artificial turf field at the HF-Arena (Wendinger Str. 100, 57258 Freudenberg). The game will also be broadcast live and free of charge in its entirety on Pluto TV.
