The scenario: Fourteenth against second. Since match day 15, VfL Wolfsburg have managed to secure only four points out of a possible 18 and they are now just one point above the relegation zone. Borussia Dortmund have consolidated second place in the table with a 13-game unbeaten run in the Bundesliga. Only three times in BVB's entire Bundesliga history have they surpassed 45 points after 20 matchdays: in 1995/96, Ottmar Hitzfeld's side had 46 points the season that three points for a win was introduced; in 2010/11 under Jürgen Klopp, they ha 50 points; and in 2018/19 under Lucien Favre, they had 49 points.

Home & away: The Lower Saxons have earned one point less at home than than they have away (nine compared to ten). Of the ten home games they have played so far this season, they have lost five and won just two – both since December (3-1 against Union, 2-1 against St. Pauli). BVB are third in the away table (five wins, four draws, one defeat). At the same point last season, they had only one away win to their name, but they had six in total by the end of the season.

Head-to-head: The Black & Yellows have won 13 of their last 15 Bundesliga matches against Wolfsburg (plus one draw and one defeat) and have scored more than twice as many goals (124) as VfL (58) in all 57 encounters (36 wins, 11 draws, 10 defeats). In Bundesliga history, only Bayern Munich have celebrated more victories (46) against Wolfsburg than BVB (37). BVB have also lost only one of their last ten Bundesliga away games at VfL (eight wins, one draw). They have won over half of their away games: 15 out of 28..

Statistics: Only two teams have needed fewer shots on goal to score on average than Borussia Dortmund (six). They have ten goals coming from crosses, which is the best record in the league. Only Union Berlin have had more shots on goal from headers than Dortmund (54). 19 points after 20 matchdays is the Wolves' worst haul in their Bundesliga history. They have scored 71% of their goals from attacks through the middle, which is the second-highest proportion of any team after Bayern Munich..

Biggest away win: On 20 September 2016, the Black & Yellows won 5-1 in Wolfsburg. Raphael Guerreiro scored with his first touch of the ball to make it 1-0 (4') and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang quickly added a second (17'). After the break, Wolfsburg were as good as if not better than BVB and pulled a goal back to make it 1-2. However, while VfL were on top, Ousmane Dembele (58') and Aubameyang (62') scored twice in quick succession, sealing the win for BVB after just over an hour. Lukasz Piszczek put the final nail in the coffin in the 73rd minute.

Last season: The last time BVB played at Wolfsburg was the last game before Christmas 2024, when 5,000 BVB fans saw them dominate from the start and control the first half. BVB went 3-0 up within the space of less than five minutes thanks to goals from Donyell Malen (25'), Maximilian Beier (28') and Julian Brandt (30') . It was pretty routine from that point on. Wolfsburg were lucky to be only 3-0 down at half time. But the balance of power changed after the restart. Denis Vavro made it 1-3 in the 58th minute and Pascal Groß was sent off shortly afterwards. Despite being a man down, Borussia held on to their lead with great passion..Compiled by Boris Rupert
