Leandro Cabrera has triggered an automatic contract extension with Espanyol, confirmed at Mestalla during the match against Valencia. According to AS, the Uruguayan’s deal now runs until 30 June 2027.
He had extended his contract on 27 May to the end of this season, with a clause adding one more year if he played 20 or more official games. The condition was met on Saturday when he started and played beyond 45 minutes in matchday 21. He has featured in every minute of this league campaign except Girona-Espanyol in September due to muscular discomfort.
Undroppable for Manolo González, Cabrera’s form has been among the best of his career, reliable in both boxes and strong in the air. He has scored two goals this season through his understanding with Edu Expósito, the first of them against Valencia in the reverse fixture, adding to four last season.
Cabrera joined on 20 January 2020 with Espanyol bottom, living through two relegations, the subsequent promotions and last season’s agonising survival. He was 28 on arrival, and this renewal takes him through to 36.
Now on 228 appearances for Espanyol, he is level with Antonio Fàbregas and Francisco López Alfaro, one behind Carlos Kameni and three shy of Sergio García. His continuity could leave him as the club’s third most-used foreign player, behind Tommy N’Kono and Mauricio Pochettino, and within reach of the overall top 10 set by Diego Orejuela at 304. He has already far outstripped his totals at Real Zaragoza, 113, and Getafe, 66.
