Cade Cowell sees New York as a reset after a turbulent Chivas spell, joining New York Red Bulls on a one-year loan with an option to buy to revive his USMNT World Cup push. Speaking to Goal.com, the winger said the move suits his game after minutes dwindled in Mexico.
His early months at Chivas brought fevered attention, notably a 5,000-strong welcome at Mexico City airport. “The fans here are just different.”
Dubbed El Vaquero, he surged in 2024, taking Liga MX’s July Player of the Month, then momentum stalled. Chivas reportedly kept him from the Olympics, and by May 2025 a fifth coach, Gabriel Milito, binned wingers, used him as a No 9, then left him out.
Cowell agreed to New York before a head coach was confirmed, but talks with head of sport Julian de Guzman convinced him. He was told he fits the Red Bull identity and said he believed in the plan.
Pre-season has reinforced that view, all ball work from day one. “Everything has been with the ball so far, really intense trainings.” He wants back into the USMNT after 12 minutes in November 2024’s 4-2 win over Jamaica, and Europe still appeals if the chance comes.
For now, New York need a lift after missing the playoffs for the first time in 15 years last season, and Michael Bradley leads a new era. Cowell aims to supply pace, width and end product.
