Cagliari defender Alessandro Deiola has been nominated for the 2025 Puskas Award for his Serie A strike, competing with the likes of Lamine Yamal and Declan Rice.
The shortlist of nominees was announced by FIFA, and the winner will be decided by a 50-50 split between fan votes and the opinion of a panel of FIFA Legends.
Of the nine goals, the one that stands out is scored by Deiola in Cagliari’s 3-0 victory over Venezia in May 2025.
While in general the Puskas Award highlights goals of rare individual skill, this one is about far more than the curling Deiola finish.
It’s about the build-up, including quick passing, a back-heel flick, and the overall team approach to getting into a scoring position.
To make it all the more impressive, this was scored during a Serie A relegation dogfight, between two teams who were at risk of relegation.
The winner will be announced during The Best FIFA Football Awards.
