Cagliari began their year by collecting a single point in their first three outings, but they enjoyed a sensational second half of January. The Isolani put together an incredible three-match winning streak that began with a shocking victory over Juventus. They followed it up by beating Fiorentina in Florence, and then smashing four past Hellas Verona.
However, Fabio Pisacane’s men have yet to pick up a point in February. They suffered a rather expected 0-2 defeat to Roma at the Stadio Olimpico, before falling at home against Lecce, also by two unanswered goals. That disappointing result left them 13th in the Serie A table with 28 points.
Lazio had their ups and downs in January, but they have only registered a single point in their first two league outings in February. The Biancocelesti were seconds away from earning a famous away win over Juventus, but they ended up conceding a late equalizer.
Maurizio Sarri’s men then eliminated Coppa Italia title holders Bologna in the quarter-finals after penalty shootouts, but they were toothless in their following league outing, suffering a 0-2 defeat to Atalanta. The Aquile thus fell to 9th place in the standings, with their chances of challenging for European spots already evaporated.
Cagliari (3-5-2): Caprile; Zappa, Mina, Ze Pedro; Palestra, Adopo, Gaetano, Mazzitelli, Obert; Kilicsoy, Esposito.
Lazio (4-3-3): Provedel; Marusic, Romagnoli, Provstgaard, Pellegrini; Dele-Bashiru, Cataldi, Taylor; Isaksen, Maldini, Noslin.
Cagliari have some interesting attacking talent among their ranks, so they might be able to find the back of the net at some point. However, even in their darkest periods (and this is certainly one), Lazio have often found a way to prevail in Sardinia, and this shouldn’t be any different.
