Callum Doyle's career so far suggests that he will be a good signing for Johannes Hoff Thorup at Norwich City.
Norwich City have signed defender Callum Doyle on loan from Manchester City and his career to date suggests that he could turn out to be an excellent player under Johannes Hoff Thorup.
The Canaries appointed Hoff Thorup this summer after they parted company with David Wagner following last season's play-off semi-final defeat against Leeds United.
Doyle is the Danish head coach's third signing since arriving at Carrow Road, with centre-back Jose Cordoba signing from Levski Sofia and left-back Ben Chrisene joining from Aston Villa previously.
The 20-year-old is capable of playing both left-back and centre-back and will strengthen Norwich's defensive options ahead of a season in which they will be looking to mount another promotion push in the Championship.
Considering what Doyle has achieved in his career so far, he could turn out to be a fantastic player for Norwich during his temporary spell in Norfolk.
Hoff Thorup gained a reputation in Denmark for his possession-based build-up play, entertaining football, and the goalscoring prowess of his Nordsjælland team. Alexander Riget, the man who hired hm for Nordsjælland, discussed his playing style in an interview with Sky Sports after he was appointed by Norwich.
"We are the team in Denmark with the most possession but Johannes as head coach has been good at implementing that so that we are not only keeping the ball but also scoring goals," said Riget.
Last season, Doyle was part of a Leicester side that ranked second for average possession in the Championship and scored the second most goals in the division. He also came through the academy at Manchester City and played under Pep Guardiola during pre-season. City ranked first for average possession in the Premier League last season and scored the most goals in the top flight too.
The youngster will have gained valuable experience during his spell at Leicester and during his time working with Guardiola, playing in systems that are similar to the style that Hoff Thorup is likely to implement at Carrow Road. He should be able to transition into his new side quickly and hit the ground running once he gets on the pitch for the Canaries.
Despite being only 20, this will be Doyle's fourth loan spell away from Manchester City, and his third at Championship level. He made his first move away from The Etihad before the 2021/22 season, signing for Sunderland ahead of their promotion-winning campaign in League One. He made 44 appearances for the Mackems and featured in their play-off final victory over Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley.
The following season he made the step up into the second tier, signing for Coventry City. He played a key role in Mark Robins' side, helping the Sky Blues reach the Championship play-off final and starting in their defeat against Luton Town at Wembley, which was decided on penalties.
Doyle spent last season on loan at Leicester City and helped the Foxes win the Championship title despite being ruled out by injury for a couple of months during the campaign.
In his three loan spells so far, he has played in two play-off finals, won promotion twice, and lifted the title in the second tier. With Norwich hoping to be in contention for promotion next season, the signing of Doyle will add valuable experience regardless of his age.
Considering his previous experiences of winning promotion and playing in possession-based teams, Doyle should be a good player for Norwich during his loan spell.
