Callum Osmand return a timely boost, but shows Celtic’s regression

Hot on the heels of the news that Alistair Johnston is nearing a return from long term injury, it’s been reported that teammate and fellow long term hamstring casualty Callum Osmand is also nearing a return to first team action, which is something of a further boost to our ailing squad.

The Jersey born striker, who signed last summer on a free transfer from Fulham, had to bide his time before being introduced into the first team by Martin O’Neill, and looked lively scoring his first and so far only goal in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final win over the Rangers back in November.

Sadly for Callum and Celtic, a few days after starting at Hampden and helping the club reach a domestic cup final, he pulled up injured with what would prove to be a serious hamstring issue in a Europa league defeat against Midtjylland in Denmark.

The 20 year old striker is highly regarded down south after his scoring exploits in the Fulham B side, and was seen as something of a coup when he was snapped up by Brendan Rodgers last summer.

Despite only playing a few first team games for the club, Callum impressed the Celtic supporters and scoring a goal against our Glasgow rivals didn’t do him any harm! He certainly looks like a player with plenty of pace and an eye for a goal, something Celtic has lacked for a season and a half really.

That’s most likely the main reason his return is being widely applauded by the Celtic support, and is also yet another example and reminder how far we’ve fallen in this eighteen months.

Don’t get me wrong, I fully believe that Callum Osmand has a decent future at Celtic, and he will add some much needed freshness into our inept attacking department, but the very fact that we are this upbeat about an inexperienced 20 year old striker returning to the squad, is yet another indicator of how far standards have dropped at Celtic Football Club under the control of Dermot Desmond.

Incidentally, I wrote about Dermot Desmond’s Celtic legacy on The Celtic Star yesterday evening – if you’ve not read it please do and let me know what you think…
