Blues midfielder was suspended by former manager Liam Rosenior for transfer plea

Calum McFarlane has “no issue” with Enzo Fernandez’s decision to spend time in Madrid on his days off this week despite last month’s club ban for comments seen by many as an invitation for Real Madrid to buy him from Chelsea.

Fernandez missed April’s games against Port Vale and Manchester City after the club imposed a two-game ban on him following multiple comments he had made in public interviews while away on international duty with Argentina in March.

The midfielder’s conduct was seen as a flirtation with Los Blancos.

Then, when Chelsea’s players were given days off on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday by McFarlane, Fernandez travelled alongside team-mates Marc Cucurella and Joao Pedro to Madrid and was pictured sat immediately in front of Real and England star Jude Bellingham in a box while attending tennis at the Madrid Open.

Asked whether being seen in Madrid so soon after the controversy was a poor judgement call by Fernandez, McFarlane replied: “We gave the lads three days off and I think it says a lot about the group that they go away together.

“I love the fact that they spend time together and they've gone to Madrid to watch tennis, so I don't see an issue with it, honestly.”

Fernandez was also in attendance at the Madrid Open last season on a day off from Chelsea duty.

McFarlane added: “He was there last year with his team-mates again. The last time they had a break, they spent time together as well, so I think it's a positive sign for the unity within the group.”
