Calvin Bassey talks about his emotional experience after returning to the Super Eagles!
As soon as the final whistle blew, Calvin Bassey, the defender for Fulham and the Nigerian national team, bowed his head in a moment filled with gratitude and reflection. After the valuable 2-1 victory over Tanzania in Fez during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the 25-year-old player stood firm as a solid defensive pillar, while his teammate at both the club and international level, Alex Iwobi, created both goals.
Before the match began, the two shared a personal conversation, reminiscing about their unconventional journeys and the honor of representing Nigeria on the biggest continental stage. Born in Italy to Nigerian parents and raised in London, Bassey faced a challenging path that left him without a club during his teenage years. Amid this conversation, emotions flowed sincerely as he said: “Sometimes I can’t grasp what God has done in my life... 10 or 11 years ago, I had no club... And now, I stand here representing my country. It’s unbelievable.”
From that humble starting point, Bassey carved his path with unwavering determination, now boasting over 220 official appearances and carrying with him a story of perseverance that translates both on the field and in the hearts of the fans.
