The future of Cameron Archer at Southampton is up in the air amid links to West Brom this summer.

The forward has been with the Saints since 2024 after signing from Aston Villa, and he’s been a regular in the side over the last two years.

The 25-year-old featured 30 times in the Championship last season, although only started on 11 occasions.

Archer contributed four goals and three assists, and helped the Saints reach the play-offs under Tonda Eckert.

But there is now uncertainty over his future at St. Mary’s, with his contract set to expire in June 2028.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, an approach was made by West Brom for Archer as of 13 August.

However, the Saints have yet to receive formal contact from their Championship rival, and it remains to be seen whether a deal can be agreed.

Archer was down the pecking order under Eckert last season, and the arrival of Divin Mubama may have an impact on his expected game time for the campaign ahead.

West Brom are keen to bolster their forward line under James Morrison, particularly following the exits of Daryl Dike and Josh Maja.

The Baggies have until 1 September to complete any remaining deals before the market shuts for the rest of the calendar year.

West Brom are facing competition in the race to sign Archer from Southampton, according to Darren Witcoop.

It’s believed that Wrexham are also among the clubs who are monitoring the situation surrounding the 25-year-old.

It’s understood that Mubama’s arrival has opened the door for Archer’s exit, but it remains to be seen what kind of fee it will take to convince the Saints to cash in.

It’s also possible that a loan deal may be on the table, with just over two weeks left in the transfer market.

The Baggies have been backed to complete the signing of Archer from Southampton this summer, with FLW’s West Brom fan pundit Callum Burgess claiming it would be a positive move.

He believes that any deal above the £8 million mark will be difficult to pull off this summer, but any fee below that figure would be a good piece of business for Morrison’s side.

"Archer showed during his spells at Preston and Middlesbrough that when he's the focal point of the team, where he's the striker that is immediately looked towards to creating chances for him," Burgess told Football League World.

"He can be a strong source of goals, and I think that he may not have benefited from that during his time at Southampton where he has been their second or third-choice during his time there.

"I think that if he does make a move, he could be a good signing for the majority of teams in the league.

"But saying that, if he does join Albion, then that'd be a great signing, but I don't really envisage us spending around £8 million or more on any sort of player this summer.

"Teams in the Championship are certainly showing their financial muscle with the new financial rules.

"But I think if Albion are able to get him signed for a fee that is good value, then it would be a great signing."

Southampton initially signed Archer from Aston Villa in a deal reported to be worth around £15 million after the Premier League side brought him back from Sheffield United using a buy-back clause.

But FLW’s Southampton fan pundit Louis Harris believes that the Saints will struggle to recoup the money spent to sign the forward two years ago.

He’s claimed that Archer lacks confidence at the moment, but that there is still hope that he could yet turn things around at St. Mary’s, so maybe he will stay this summer instead.

"But as it stands, we are currently very light in the striker department.

"There’s no doubt that he’s able to score goals at Championship level but it just hasn’t worked out since joining Saints.

“He does look extremely low on confidence as well.

"However, saying that, he did have a bit of a flurry of goal involvement towards the end of the season.

"So, maybe there’s still hope yet.

"I think the club are well aware that if he does leave, they’re probably only likely to see half of the £15 million that they paid for him."
