Cameron Carter-Vickers – “He’s just top-level,” Liam Scales

Liam Scales has admitted Celtic teammate Cameron Carter-Vickers is a top-level footballer and the best defender in Scottish football…

The Irishman was speaking about his fellow Hoops defender recently and claimed that there is no other centre-back in Scotland who can compare.

Scales had to do without the stewardship and quality of his teammate for the vast majority of last season, partnering Auston Trusty at the back on most occasions. That partnership did their very best, but just never had the same gravitas without the involvement of Carter-Vickers on a regular basis.

CCV is now back from that injury against Sturm Graz in the Europa League last year and his teammate is hoping he is able to stay fit going forward into this campaign. When asked about his thoughts on whether or not the American would help take things up a notch in terms of performance level, he replied: “Yes, it’s brilliant,” as reported by Daily Record.

“He’s really just a top player and he looks sharp and he looks fit. He’s a great defender. I’d say he’s the best centre-half in the league. He’s just top-level, so it’s great to have him back.

“We definitely missed him last season. He’s a leader on the pitch. He’s not the loudest, but the way he plays, he leads by example.”

Liam was open and honest about missing the ‘Big Strong Man’s’ presence in the team last term. “We did miss that at times,” he said. “He has certain attributes. Obviously, his physical presence is massive and maybe we did miss that at times. But yes, it’s great to have him back.”

The former Shamrock Rovers man enjoys a good friendship with Cameron away from the pitch too, revealing: “We do loads outside of training. We’re good pals when we’re together, for sure. We spend a lot of time together in the training ground. We speak a lot about the football, about life outside as well. We’re very close.

“I think it comes with playing together as well,” the Republic of Ireland international commented.

“When you’re playing together, you do speak a lot about what’s going on on the pitch and what you need from each other. That leads to spending more time together and you build a relationship that way.

“Obviously, me and Cam signed in the same window five years ago, so we’ve been out on our own and that as well. But we’ve spent the majority of five years playing together or in the same dressing room. So we’ve had a lot of time to build that connection,” Scales revealed, as he opened up on his relationship with his fellow Celtic defender away from the pitch.
