CAN 2019 - Algeria: Delort describes the unimaginable

CAN 2019: Andy Delort recounts a wild scene in Algeria
Andy Delort has never forgotten the summer of 2019. As a guest on the Kampo podcast on YouTube, the Algerian striker looked back on Algeria’s historic victory at the Africa Cup of Nations. More than the trophy itself, it was the overwhelming passion he experienced in the streets that left the deepest mark on him. For the former international, the connection between the team and the Algerian people remains one of the most powerful memories of his career.
Delort recalls being completely overwhelmed by the intensity of the celebrations.
Some scenes in the crowd seemed almost surreal.
"We were under a pretty high bridge, and someone jumped into the bus," he remembers.
The striker also describes a fan left dangling after climbing through a shattered bus shelter:
"He was upside down, but he just kept on celebrating."
Among the images that stuck with him the most, Delort also remembers the incredible energy of Algerian supporters.
"I saw elderly women, 75 years old, running barefoot—they were going faster than me," he recounts, amused.
Another scene particularly caught him off guard:
"He was trying to hand us his little child… we kept telling him no," Delort says, recalling a father who attempted to toss his baby toward the team bus so the players could hold him.
For Delort, these moments perfectly sum up the unique passion that surrounds Algeria’s national team. An extraordinary celebration that, years later, remains etched in the memory of the 2019 African champions.
