Arsenal welcome Bayern Munich to the Emirates this evening in a mouth-watering Champions League showdown.
It’s a meeting between the top two in the league phase format, both having taken maximum points from four games and recorded a goal difference of +11. Arsenal and Bayern have, arguably, been Europe’s most impressive teams this season and something will have to give this evening.
For Mikel Arteta’s side, it’s a chance to demonstrate how far they’ve come. After returning to the Champions League from a six-season absence in 2023/24, the North Londoners reached the quarter-finals on their return, and a semi-final last season.
However, few teams evoke dread among the Arsenal fanbase more than Bayern. The Gunners have a poor historic record in this fixture, with recent encounters having favoured the German giants.
It’s been a decade since Arsenal last beat Bayern in European competition, while they’ve won just three of the previous 14 meetings. That includes three consecutive 5-1 defeats between 2015 and 2017. Two of those Arsenal wins, meanwhile, came in two-legged ties that the Gunners went on to lose.
