Barcelona host Bayern Munich in the Champions League this evening, in a contest between two teams with rich history in this competition.

The new format of the Champions League was designed to bring together the top teams more often and the Spanish and German league leaders go head-to-head in a heavyweight tussle tonight.

Barcelona and Bayern Munich share 11 European crowns between them but this has been a rather one-sided rivalry when the teams have done battle.

Bayern, to put it bluntly, have been Barcelona’s nemesis in continental competition and have won 10 of the previous 13 Champions League games between the teams, losing just twice.

That run includes six straight wins for the German giants, who have compiled an aggregate score of 22-4 in the Bavarians’ favour during those six showdowns. Barcelona have not even scored in the last four games.

The most memorable of all saw Bayern Munich thrash Barcelona 8-2 in a one-legged quarter-final during the 2019/20 season. It was the first time Barcelona had conceded eight goals in a game since 1946 and only the second time the Catalan club had shipped more than four goals in a European game.

Hansi Flick’s brilliant start as Barcelona boss will raise confidence ahead of the latest clash, as the German looks to mastermind a win over his old side.

However, scars of past contests will not disappear overnight…
