Can Bayern play Leipzig? Statement causes confusion

The quarter-final of the DFB Cup between FC Bayern and RB Leipzig next Wednesday evening is still in the balance due to the announced strike on Munich’s public transport system, which will make travelling to and from the Allianz Arena much more difficult. According to a statement from Munich’s public transport company (MVG), the situation is still unclear – and uncertainty remains among fans

The MVG confirmed on Monday that the strike will go ahead as planned. „The MVG will go on strike again on Wednesday, 11 February. How to reach the Allianz Arena for the cup match on Wednesday evening by public transport is currently being intensively examined,“ the company announced. This makes it clear that buses and subway trains will probably not run at all or only to a very limited extent – on an evening when around 75,000 spectators are expected to attend the DFB Cup tie

According to MVG, talks are currently underway with all relevant parties. „MVG is in close contact with the Allianz Arena, FC Bayern, the relevant authorities and other partners. The aim is to find possible solutions for the arrival and departure of fans,“ the statement continues. However, there is no concrete all-clear

On the contrary: a central emergency scenario already seems to be off the table. „Under the current circumstances, however, it does not appear possible to connect the stadium, at least in part, with a replacement bus service,“ explained MVG. This point in particular exacerbates the situation, as the majority of spectators normally travel to the stadium by public transport and parking options around the arena are limited

MVG is playing for time, still no solution in sight

It is still unclear whether alternative concepts are possible. „Whether and which specific options will be available on Wednesday evening is currently still part of the ongoing review. As soon as reliable results are available, these will be communicated immediately,“ MVG announced. A clear statement as to whether the match can take place or not is therefore still missing. With the statement, MVG is ultimately only repeating the problem once again without offering any kind of solution in prospect. And this just two days before the planned date of the match

Uncertainty also continues to prevail at FC Bayern, with FCB CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen stating after the 5-1 win against TSG Hoffenheim: „We will have to see if and how we organize this.“ A cancellation or postponement of the match is therefore still not out of the question

One thing is certain: the DFB Cup clash against RB Leipzig, scheduled for Wednesday evening with kick-off at 8.45 p.m. in the Allianz Arena, is under enormous organizational pressure. For the time being, fans can only wait for a decision – and hope that a viable solution can still be found.
