On Monday, July 7, 2025, in Oujda, Ghana suffered a 2-0 defeat to South Africa in the opening match of Group C. Despite firing thirteen shots, the Black Queens failed to find the back of the net, a fact that left head coach Kim Björkegren visibly disappointed with his team's clear but fruitless attacking display.
Defending champions South Africa asserted their dominance in this tournament curtain-raiser. Linda Motlhalo broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 28th minute, converting after Noxolo Cesane was brought down inside the box. Just six minutes later, Jermaine Seoposenwe—making her 100th international appearance—doubled the lead, finishing off a cross from Lebohang Ramalepe. Although the second half was more balanced, neither side managed to alter the scoreline. Ghana's Swedish coach, Kim Lars Björkegren, expressed his astonishment after the final whistle.
"I'm a little disappointed with the result. We played very well. We created enough chances to score a few goals. We had 13 shots in the match. I think we were the better team for the first 30 minutes and part of the second half. We need to be a bit sharper and more precise in the box, because they scored and we didn't. That's football. Otherwise, I think we did very well in other areas. We hit the post several times and she [Andile Dlamini] made some good saves," he said after the match.
The Black Queens will look to bounce back against Mali's Eagles Ladies on Friday, July 11, in the second round of group stage fixtures.
