Sory Kaba has returned to OH Leuven for a second spell in Belgian football. The 30-year-old Guinean striker spent the 2021/2022 season on loan at the club from Danish side FC Midtjylland. He now returns a few seasons later from Spanish side Las Palmas with OH Leuven fans hoping he can show similar form to a few seasons ago. David Hubert’s side have been crying out for a goal scorer this season, and under other managers in previous seasons. Kaba may be the answer to their problems.
During his previous spell with OH Leuven, Kaba scored 12 goals in 29 games. For context, the top scorer for OH Leuven last season was Siebe Schrijvers with seven. That was the same number of goals as their top scorer in 2023/2024, when Jon Thorsteinsson and Youssef Maziz both got seven. However, Kaba has not had as good a season since leaving Belgium. In 2022/2023 he did do well at Cardiff with eight goals in 17 games in the Championship. He moved to Las Palmas in 2023 but only scored two goals in 20 games. Lat season he was loaned to Elche, the side he started his career with. In 27 games in the Spanish second tier and the Copa del Rey he scored just four goals.
Kaba’s physical presence should help OH Leuven up top at least, and a return to Belgian football could be just what he needs to rediscover his scoring ability.
