Corinthians can register Memphis Depay’s contract extension despite transfer bans, though the timing is disputed with his current deal expiring on Friday.

The CBF said in a statement that an extension is not subject to the ban because it continues an existing link. It added that the procedure can proceed normally, with any FIFA queries up to the club.

Corinthians plan to sign the new agreement by Friday, before expiry. They expect the CBF registration, and subsequent publication in the BID, to follow after the previous deal lapses. His Brazilian work visa still needs regularising and he must pass medical tests.

New signings cannot be registered under the ban, which led the club to step back from a move for Wesley. Corinthians currently have three transfer bans, two imposed by FIFA and one by the CNRD, tied to debts totalling about R$ 21.5 million.

A stricter reading of the rules holds that, to count as an extension, the deal should be signed and filed with the CBF before expiry. Otherwise any later agreement risks being treated as a new contract, which would be blocked by the ban. Filing before the deadline can keep the link continuous because CBF regulations allow up to 30 days to complete registration, with BID publication following once items such as his work visa are cleared.
