Chelsea begin their Champions League campaign with a tough trip to face Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.

The West Londoners travel to the Allianz Arena, the venue and opposition of their maiden Champions League triumph in 2012.

Chelsea will have to contend with a talented Bayern Munich side that features Harry Kane and Michael Olise, while the Blues could also be haunted by a familiar face.

Nicolas Jackson joined Bayern Munich on loan from Chelsea on deadline day and the forward is free to face his parent club tomorrow evening. UEFA rules differ from the Premier League and permit loan players to play against their parent clubs.

According to UEFA‘s ‘Statement on Integrity of Competitions’, clubs playing in their three competitions cannot insert clauses that prevent their own players from facing them in European games.

Jackson was deemed surplus to requirements at Chelsea in the summer, following the arrivals of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap. The Senegal striker signed for Bayern on an initial loan and made his debut against Hamburg in the Bundesliga at the weekend.

Though unlikely to start in Munich on Wednesday, Jackson could feature against Chelsea and will be eager to prove a point.

The 24-year-old scored 30 goals in 81 games across his two seasons at Chelsea and was a central part of the club’s Champions League qualification last season.

Tottenham Hotspur face a similar situation on matchday one. The North Londoners loaned out-of-favour winger Manor Solomon to Villarreal in the summer, with the Israel international available to face Spurs this week.
