Last-16 action gets underway in Houston
The World Cup 2026 round of 16 begins with tournament co-hosts Canada taking on Morocco in Houston this evening. The Atlas Lions are slight favourites to reach the quarter-final, where France could lie in wait as they face Paraguay later today, though a shock result cannot be ruled out.
Morocco, who finished fourth in Qatar four years ago, will need to step things up having required a stoppage-time equaliser from Issa Diop against Netherlands before prevailing via dramatic penalty shootout. Canada, meanwhile, also left it late to overcome South Africa in their round of 32 tie as a first-ever World Cup knockout stage place was secured thanks to Stephen Eustaquio’s 92nd minute goal.
Alphonso Davies will have to wait to make his first start of the tournament for Canada following a return to action as a substitute in the last round. Morocco have been dealt a blow with defender Chadi Riad ruled out, but Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi is set for another chance to impress amid transfer links to Arsenal, Real Madrid and both Manchester clubs.
