Barcelona have brought Joao Cancelo back on a permanent deal running to 2029, marking his third spell with the club. The 32-year-old terminated his Al-Hilal contract, which was due to 2027, to join on a free. He becomes the fifth recruit of the summer after Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Jesse Piseo and Rodri.

Cancelo will sign the paperwork today at president Joan Laporta’s office alongside Jorge Mendes, Rafa Yuste, Deco and Bojan Krkic. His official unveiling is scheduled for 1:45pm local time. Mundo Deportivo reports that he arrived last Monday, with the agreement reached on Sunday after he fell out of Simone Inzaghi’s plans at Al-Hilal.

The return came at the player’s insistence, with Cancelo considering no other offer and fixated on a Camp Nou comeback. His strong second half of last season under Hansi Flick, thriving at left-back across 23 matches in the league, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey, cemented his importance.

There was a twist last Wednesday, when he appeared at Camp Nou for the team presentation before the Joan Gamper Trophy against Egypt’s Al-Ahly. Wearing the number 2 shirt in the tunnel and keen to feature, he was kept off the pitch as formalities were incomplete. His presentation was pushed to today.

He will reunite with former Manchester City team-mate Rodri after three and a half years alongside each other. His first Barcelona spell came in 2023-2024 on loan from City under Xavi Hernandez, before a move to Al-Hilal for 25 million euros.
