Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has pleaded with his former club to sell Bruno Fernandes to Al-Hilal, adding that the skipper “confuses the system” under Ruben Amorim.
Fernandes’ United future has been the subject of intense speculation over the past few days, with Al-Hilal strongly interested in him.
The Saudi Pro League outfit want to have a marquee signing in place for the upcoming Club World Cup and have identified Fernandes as their top target.
It’s been stated that Al-Hilal have presented Fernandes with an eye-watering £200million contract. They’re also prepared to make United a £100million offer.
It’s understood Fernandes is seriously considering the proposal. Meanwhile, United remain relaxed about the situation.
After the Red Devils’ 3-1 post-season victory over Hong Kong, Amorim expressed confidence that Fernandes will remain at the club and captain the side in the upcoming 2025/26 season.
However, Scholes is of the opinion that the money on offer is simply too good for United to turn down, especially considering their financial woes.
Speaking on The Overlap, Scholes remarked, “They are talking about £100m for him. Man United cannot say no to that.”
“You know when you talk about this system as well, I know he has been brilliant and carried the team on his back but where does he play? What is his position? Do you see him as a number 10? Do you see him as a holding midfielder?”
“He almost confuses the whole system because he doesn’t have that one position for him. I mean he has been brilliant don’t get me wrong.”
The former England international added, “But when you’re getting £100m for him you snap their hand off and take it.”
Meanwhile, Sky Sports journalist Melissa Reddy has indicated that Al-Hilal are concerned that European clubs may hijack their deal for Fernandes.
According to Reddy, Al-Hilal are aware that Fernandes prioritises sporting merit over financial rewards and if a top European club makes a move for him, it would likely spell the end of their pursuit.
Fernandes registered an impressive 19 goals and 20 assists for United in the just-concluded 2024/25 campaign.
