Cape Verde’s national team received a heroes’ welcome on their return home on Sunday, days after a 3-2 extra-time defeat to reigning champions Argentina in the last 32 of the World Cup.

According to L'Équipe, a large crowd gathered at the airport to greet the Blue Sharks on a landmark homecoming. Many journalists were in attendance.

The celebrations coincided with the country’s national day, marking the anniversary of its declaration of independence on 5 July 1975. The occasion also honoured the team’s first ever appearance at a World Cup.

Bubista’s side advanced from their group unbeaten, drawing 0-0 with Spain, 2-2 with Uruguay and 0-0 with Saudi Arabia.

Footage from the arrival showed jubilant scenes, including an airport worker kneeling on the tarmac as if prostrating before the plane carrying Vozinha and his team-mates.
