Former AC Milan head coach Fabio Capello believes that Paulo Fonseca’s side showed a balance problem again in Saturday’s season opener, but that the signing of Youssouf Fofana will help.

Milan had an excellent preseason in which they beat the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester City and Barcelona (on penalties) out in the United States, but in many ways the first game of the season against Torino was a reminder of the work still to be done.

Duvan Zapata’s second-half header stunned San Siro into silence as the away side went 2-0 up and it looked like being a painful debut for Fonseca. However, goals from the two substitutes Alvaro Morata and Noah Okafor ended up rescuing a point with a dramatic late fightback.

Capello has a column in today’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport and he speaks about his former club Milan and their summer activity so far, with his comments relayed by PianetaMilan.

“Milan are conducting a mercato aimed at becoming even more European, in terms of physicality and mentality. From the Rossoneri, and in particular from Paulo Fonseca, I expect growth, especially in midfield,” he said.

“Against Torino, Milan had balance problems, but I am sure that the Portuguese coach has already understood how to deal with it, also thanks to new purchases like Fofana.

“It will take time, hopefully not too much, to integrate the new players and then the Rossoneri team will be able to do good things in the Champions League too.”
