Despite two exciting arrivals thus far, supporters should also be impressed by Cardiff City's impending outgoings

The focus among Cardiff City supporters has chiefly been on summer incomings and understandably so.

After operating under a partial embargo last summer which restricted them to free agents and loan transfers and then having to suddenly overhaul their plans in the January window in order to ensure compliance with the EFL's Profit and Sustainability (PSR) rules, Cardiff now have a fresh license to bolster their squad without restriction this time around.

Although funds are available for Erol Bulut after he agreed to extend his contract in the Welsh capital, the Bluebirds have initially optimised the free transfer market by bringing in both Chris Willock and Calum Chambers - two exciting captures that fans hope are the precursors to a significant summer window that'll help next season's play-off push.

It's not forgotten that Cardiff are still in dire need of reinforcements in certain areas of the pitch; two strikers will likely be required to install the firepower that the Bluebirds have lacked so sorely in recent years, fresh impetus in midfield would help them to control games more.

Another winger certainly wouldn't go amiss and there's every chance that Erol Bulut will demand more depth in his full-back areas as the window goes on, too. But it can be easy to just get caught up in the hypothesising of where they can improve, and who with.

Adherence to strictly imposed PSR regulations also involves player sales to bring money back into the club and that's another facet of Cardiff's summer activity that will certainly prove crucial to the business they're able to conduct later on in the window.

Ebou Adams and Andy Rinomhota set for Cardiff City exits

Every summer without fail, it's felt as though Cardiff have had monumental deadwood to shift. They may not have so many peripheral squad members compared to previous years, but Ebou Adams and Andy Rinomhota both remained very much on the fringes.

The two midfielders both joined Cardiff in the summer of 2022 but Adams missed the entirety of his opening campaign in Wales after arriving from Forest Green Rovers owing to a freak pectoral injury sustained during pre-season, while Rinomhota grew on supporters as a rather shrewd pickup from Reading and made 39 Championship appearances.

By the time Adams returned to match readiness, three separate managers had come and gone and that untenable turnover undoubtedly worked against his favour, with Bulut rarely fancying him in the half-season he spent with Cardiff before joining Derby County on loan in January.

In stark contrast, Adams' time at Pride Park was a roaring success and he's now joined the Rams for a fee just shy of £1m after helping them to promotion from League One at the end of last season.

Rinomhota was also sent out on loan at the season's midway point, although his temporary spell with Rotherham United pales in comparison. The 27-year-old, who had made just three Championship appearances under Bulut in 23/24, found regular action more forthcoming in South Yorkshire but was ultimately part of the beleaguered Millers side that succumbed to relegation with just 27 points to their name.

While that's not just on Rinomhota, of course - the fortunes of their season were already a foregone conclusion by the time of his arrival - it's hardly a glowing endorsement and has done him little favours in any quest to potentially force his way into Bulut's thinking.

With his contract set to expire next summer, a summer departure had been feeling inevitable for some time and that school of thought has been heightened following a recent reveal from Darren Witcoop, who believes that Rinomhota will leave this summer amid interest from Birmingham City and other undisclosed clubs.

Adams' departure and the likely exit of Rinomhota will both free up vital funds for Bulut to reinvest before the transfer window slams shut, an overwhelming positive given the further squad surgery that must still be undertaken if Cardiff are to truly battle for top-six contention.

It'll also facilitate a clearer pathway for academy graduate Eli King, who too operates in defensive midfield and has returned from a fruitful 2023/24 campaign spent on loan with Morecambe and Ross County.

Cardiff have already offloaded Romaine Sawyers, an invaluable squad member off the pitch but one of little importance on it.

That decision, coupled with those taken to strive to move Adams and Rinomhota onto pastures new is indicative of a different, more bullish yet more refreshing stance from the Welsh club, who are no longer willing to accommodate and carry deadwood.

They'll be saving plenty on wages, prioritising homegrown talent and recouping fees to reinvest. That should surely add to the positivity humming among supporters at the minute.
