FLW's resident Cardiff City fan pundit discussed one player he would love to see the Bluebirds sign in the remainder of the summer transfer window...
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Cardiff City will be looking to bolster the squad at the disposal of freshly-appointed head coach Brian Barry-Murphy before the end of the summer transfer window, with the Bluebirds intent on achieving promotion from League One at the very first attempt.
At the time of writing, Cardiff remain the only League One club yet to make a single signing this summer, despite releasing nine players at the end of their respective contracts back in June and being widely tipped among the promotion favourites after suffering relegation from the Championship.
They are, however, closing in on a move for FC Copenhagen goalkeeper Nathan Trott, who will arrive on an initial loan deal which the club will be able to make permanent next summer at a cost of £1.57 million if promotion is achieved.
It will be hoped, then, that Trott's impending arrival can kick-start a late chain of activity, of sorts. Supporters have been banging the drum for additions to be made to Barry-Murphy's promotion-fancied side, although the club themselves are excited about the existing core of the squad - particularly the younger crop of emerging talent, of course - and believe that only a small handful of signings are required in order to compete for promotion.
A new winger or two would perhaps not go amiss, although it's at the back where additions are sorely needed and a new left-back should, one would assume, be high on the agenda following Callum O'Dowda's departure to Hungarian giants Ferencvaros.
FLW asked our resident Bluebirds fan pundit, Matt Hall, to name and explain one player he would realistically love to see the Bluebirds sign before September 1's summer transfer deadline.
Matt opted to go with Tomas Galvez, who is currently contracted to Manchester City. First signed from Watford's academy back in 2021, the 20-year-old has long been held in a high regard at City and featured regularly under Brian Barry-Murphy when he was in charge of the Elite Development Squad (EDS).
Known as a technically-assured, attack-minded full-back with the pace and energy to set the tempo down the left-hand side of the pitch, Galvez made 52 appearances during Barry-Murphy's reign and has already earned five senior caps at international level for Finland, whom he qualifies for through his mother, and spent the entirety of the 2024/25 season on loan with Austrian side LASK and Cambuur of the Dutch second-tier.
A third loan exit from City would appear on the cards, then, and Matt believes a move to Cardiff would be the natural next step in Galvez's career.
In Matt's view, the highly-rated prospect would offer a shrewd rotational option with Joel Bagan owing to his increased attacking impetus.
"To answer your question, I think one of the players that I would be quite interested in signing is Tomas Galvez," Matt told FLW.
"Now obviously he's not going to be a renowned name, but I think we're looking at left-back as one of the key positions.
"It's quite an easy link in the sense that he played in the second division of Dutch football, which isn't a world-class standard, but we are at League One level, so naturally I think this would be the next step for him.
"He's contracted to Manchester City, he worked under Barry-Murphy when he was in the Development Squad. He was quite key in the system, he did a lot of underlapping runs.
"At the moment, we have Joel Bagan who is more of a reserved and defensive full-back, and I think bringing somebody like Galvez in on loan would be something we would look to do. It's quite an easy connection to make, and also gives us that much-needed back-up left-back who can rotate in and give us an option that's a bit more attacking than Bagan is."
It would, of course, make perfect sense for Pep Guardiola's side to trust Barry-Murphy's Bluebirds with the handling of some of their prospects on season-long loans, with the Irishman having accumulated a wonderful reputation for developing top-of-the-range talent and coaching an identifiable, progressive possession-based brand of football during his time in Manchester.
From Oscar Bobb, Rico Lewis, James McAtee and Nico O'Reilly to Chelsea trio Liam Delap, Roméo Lavia and, most notably of all, Cole Palmer, Barry-Murphy has played a role in the development of no shortage of stars.
He even coached classy Bluebirds midfielder Alex Robertson while at City, of course, and it will be hoped that the personal connection and history between the two can convince the 22-year-old to remain in the Welsh capital this summer.
Barry-Murphy's track record hands Cardiff an obvious advantage over many of their third-tier counterparts when it comes to attracting young talent on loan, with clubs sure to be more inclined to send theirs to South Wales as a result.
That factor will be particularly prominent in the event of any potential pursuit of youngsters on City's books, although you would like to think that Cardiff will still hold a clear Barry-Murphy trump card with prospective loan signings from other Premier League clubs, too, which could offer a huge boost to their promotion ambitions as we head towards the latter stages of the current transfer window.
