Milan owner Gerry Cardinale confirms ‘ambitious plan’ for a new stadium and sees a ‘huge’ opportunity to bring the club ‘back to where it was.’

Cardinale opened up about his future plans for Milan on stage at the IMG x RedBird Summit.

“What I’m trying to do there is bring what I’ve learned over 30 years in America to European football,” he said, as quoted by the Financial Times.

“There’s a huge opportunity to return Milan back to where it was.”

The Financial Times adds that Cardinale said he has pushed to improve the team’s performance on and off the pitch and that RedBird has an “ambitious” plan to replace the old San Siro, which they share with city rivals Inter.

Milan have been developing a plan to build a new stadium in the area of San Donato, separate from Inter, but the Financial Times says ‘local politicians are keen for the two clubs to invest jointly in the existing facilities.’

Milan and Inter directors met with Milano’s Major Beppe Sala on Friday morning to discuss the future steps.

The Milan City Council is willing to sell San Siro to Inter and Milan or loan it for up to 100 years, but the two clubs would need to pay for refurbishment works.
