Cardoso speaks about the tension within Mamelodi Sundowns due to the league race this season!
The path of a professional athlete is often portrayed as one of relentless glory, but for former Kaizer Chiefs winger Kgaogelo Sekgota, it led to a quiet, transformative room in a rehabilitation center outside Polokwane.
For four months, Sekgota stepped away from the roaring stadiums to confront a personal battle with alcohol abuse at the Hope of Achievers Rehabilitation Centre, a facility familiar with the struggles of footballers, having also helped former Mamelodi Sundowns star Lerato Chabangu.
Now, in a moment of profound courage, Sekgota has opened up about that difficult journey. He speaks not with shame, but with the clarity of someone who has faced his challenges head-on. The decision to seek help, he reveals, was a collective and loving one, born from the unwavering support of those closest to him.
“Obviously, my family, my partner, and I made an agreement that I must go there and reset myself,”] he shared, reflecting on the pivotal choice. He spoke openly about the universal nature of struggle, stating, [“As a person, you do have challenges, and I have learnt from mine that I faced.”
Through it all, the foundation of his recovery was the loyalty of his loved ones. “My family never turned back on me. My partner never turned her back on me.” This steadfast support has been the catalyst for his renewal. With a quiet confidence, Sekgota looks forward, declaring himself recovered and ready to reclaim his career. “So I am myself, and I am Kgaogelo Sekgota as people know. I am also just working hard to do what’s best for me and my family,” he affirmed, signaling a powerful and hard-earned new beginning.
