According to The Scottish Sun, former Sunderland and Wales midfielder Carl Robinson is among the favourites for the vacant St Mirren manager’s job.

The 49-year-old made 57 appearances for the Black Cats between 2004 and 2006 and won 52 caps for Wales. He left Western Sydney Wanderers in 2022, is currently an assistant coach at MLS side Atlanta United, and also works in coach education for the Welsh FA.

St Mirren began their search after Stephen Robinson departed for Aberdeen earlier this month. They are 10th with 24 points from 30 games, while Livingston are bottom on 15 with one win, so relegation looks unlikely.

The Buddies also lifted the Scottish League Cup in December, beating Celtic 3-1 at Hampden Park for only the second triumph in their history.

Other candidates named include Neil Lennon, Simo Valakari, Gary Naismith, Mark Wilson and former Dundee coach Tony Docherty.

St Mirren face Falkirk away, Aberdeen at home and Celtic away before the split, then meet Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-final on 18 April. If appointed in time, Robinson could lead them into that tie.
