Carlo Ancelotti is set to leave his role as Real Madrid manager before the end of the season (h/t Sky Sports).
The Italian is expected to exit after the Copa del Rey final. This decision follows Real Madrid’s heavy loss to Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals..
Mikel Arteta’s team defeated the Spanish giants 5–1 on aggregate, raising fresh questions about the club’s direction.
Despite being only four points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona, Ancelotti is now set to make an early exit.
He will reportedly assume a role with the Brazilian national team before the current season concludes.
Following Wednesday’s defeat to Arsenal, Ancelotti hinted at his future with the club. He said, “It could be this year or next year when my contract runs out – there’s no problem about it.”
Ancelotti has played a massive part in Madrid’s domestic and European success over the years.
He is in his second spell with the club after previously managing them from 2013 to 2015.
He led them to Champions League and Copa del Rey success during that time. He is the only manager to win league titles in all five top European leagues.
His five Champions League trophies are also a record for any manager. Ancelotti has featured in six Champions League finals throughout his career.
Madrid struggled in the Champions League group stage this season and needed the play-offs to qualify for the knockout phase.
They have also lost five La Liga matches, increasing pressure on Ancelotti.
Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, now the head of global football at Red Bull, has been linked with the job.
Klopp is open to leaving that role for only two jobs – Madrid or Brazil. He has reportedly told close friends that he would consider either job if he was approached.
