Carlo Ancelotti’s view on becoming Manchester United manager has come to light, with the Italian previously understood to have considered the Old Trafford hotseat “too much pressure”.
The Red Devils are currently in a state of chaos after INEOS decided to pull the trigger on Ruben Amorim‘s time at the club.
The Portuguese coach’s tumultuous tenure ended after a complete breakdown in his relationship with the executive structure, led by sporting director Jason Wilcox.
Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher has taken charge of the senior side on a temporary basis, while a permanent caretaker is sourced until the end of the season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick are the two frontrunners for this role.
This plan affords INEOS patience in identifying the long-term replacement for Amorim, as they prefer to wait until the summer before making a final decision, since the pool of prospective candidates will grow, particularly after the World Cup finishes.
Three managers set to lead countries at the tournament in North America — Ancelotti (Brazil), Thomas Tuchel (England) and Mauricio Pochettino (United States) — are understood to feature highly on the club’s shortlist, with Premier League pedigree a factor influencing the search.
Both of the men at the helm during INEOS’s reign — Erik ten Hag and Amorim — had no experience in England prior to taking their roles as coach of England’s biggest club.
There are few managers in the history of football who can match Ancelotti’s glittering CV, with the 66-year-old having led Europe’s biggest clubs to the game’s grandest prizes.
He has enjoyed successful spells at AC Milan, Juventus, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, among others. However, it was a surprise stint with Everton which led to the idea he would not consider taking over United, with Solskjaer revealing the Italian had joked the job was “too much pressure” in a 1-1 stalemate.
However, Duncan Castles now reveals Ancelotti has “always coveted” managing the Red Devils and wants to do so before he calls it a day.
“Carlo Ancelotti, I think is interesting, because Ancelotti, I heard a long time ago, in fact, when he was Chelsea coach, from someone close to him, that he has always coveted the Manchester United job and wanted an opportunity to do that before he retired,” the transfer expert states.
It would be a remarkable turn of events for the legendary coach to take the reins at Old Trafford in this late stage of his career. But stranger things have happened in football, and Don Carlo fits the bill for what INEOS are looking for this summer – as Gary Neville confirms.
