Carlos Carvalhal says a family vote stopped him taking the Flamengo job in 2020, despite advanced talks, because of the covid-19 pandemic.

"My family never opposed going, but we had a problem because it was the pandemic. My wife, my daughter and my son voted against because of the uncertainty, many people were dying. In a family vote, it was a no," he told ESPN.

The Portuguese coach, 70, has worked only in Europe to date, so 2020 would have been his first job in Brazil. Like Jorge Jesus, he stayed away from Brazilian football during the pandemic.

Carvalhal has been without a club since mid 2025, when his contract with Braga ended. He won the Taça de Portugal with the club in 2021.

Flamengo instead appointed Domènec Torrent. The Spaniard did not see out the 2020 season, and Rogério Ceni took charge after his dismissal.
