Carlos Cordeiro, principal adviser to Gianni Infantino at FIFA, resigned with immediate effect on Friday, saying in a statement he opposes the plan to sell World Cup stakes to private investors.

He would not stand idle and described the project as a bad deal for football. He also insisted he took no part in the proposal and opposes it unequivocally.

His objections extended to the rationale for raising 4.2 billion dollars by selling part of FIFA’s most valuable asset, the World Cup, despite reserves of several billion dollars and no debt.

The resignation is another setback for Infantino’s plan, which has already been rejected by UEFA and Concacaf.

The AFC offered support to those bodies, though it stopped short of declaring disapproval of the project.
