Palmeiras’ dressing room at Casa Blanca in Quito was jubilant on Wednesday, with team-mates hailing Carlos Miguel and captain Gustavo Gómez emotional after securing a Conmebol Libertadores semi-final place. According to Globo.com, the celebrations followed a penalty shootout against LDU.

Abel Ferreira’s side conceded late in normal time as LDU turned the game around, taking the tie to penalties. Miguel then saved two LDU spot-kicks to put Palmeiras into their 13th Libertadores semi-final.

Shy on the pitch, Miguel was mobbed in the dressing room, applauded and embraced by team-mates and Abel Ferreira.

Left-back Piquerez, who converted one of Palmeiras’ penalties, was captured entering the tunnel celebrating wildly.

Suspended captain Gustavo Gómez did not play but travelled with the squad to Quito. He was seen celebrating emotionally alongside Abel Ferreira.

Back in Brazil, Paulinho, recovering from a muscle injury, also celebrated the result. A video captured the No 10’s reaction after Miguel’s decisive save.

Palmeiras will meet Fluminense for a place in the final. The ties are scheduled for the weeks of 14 in Rio de Janeiro and 22 October.
